Removable vs integrated battery
A removable pack lifts out so you can charge it at a desk and take it inside overnight. A permanently integrated pack saves 300–500 g of latching hardware, seals better against water, and allows a cleaner frame — but the bike has to be charged wherever it is parked.
Removable, integrated into the down tube. In most European cities a bike sleeps outside or in a shared hallway with no socket, and a pack that comes upstairs with you is also the part a thief cannot resell.

Cold is the case people forget
Lithium cells lose usable capacity as they cool — roughly a fifth of it at freezing — and charging a pack below 0 °C plates lithium onto the anode, which damages it permanently. Good battery management systems refuse to charge when cold, which is a safety feature that reads as a fault.
A removable pack sidesteps all of it. The pack spends the night at room temperature and starts the morning at full capacity, in Stockholm as in Barcelona.
What removability costs the engineer
Every removable pack needs a latch that survives thousands of cycles, a connector rated for the full motor current, and a seal that stays IP67 after both have been operated in grit for three winters. That is several hundred grams and a meaningful share of the warranty risk.
It also constrains the frame: the down tube needs a long opening, and the material removed from the most highly stressed tube has to be replaced with wall thickness and internal ribbing around the aperture.
